BBB Sees Increase in Consumer Gripes
Racquel Williams Reporting

According to an annual report released by The Better Business Bureau, consumer complaints increased by 9.7 percent in 2009. Nearly 1 million complaints were filed by disgruntled customers last year.
The increase in complaints to the bbb reflect the troubled economy. The top industry to generate complaints was the cell phone industry, which received the largest number of complaints in 2009 with 37,477, a 2.1 percent increase over last year. The cable and satellite TV industry ranked second with 32,616 complaints, an 8.7 percent increase over the previous year. Rounding out the top three, banks received 29,920 complaints, a 42.3 percent increase over the previous year.
Melissa Companick, President of The New Jersey BBB, says 97.4 percent of cell phone company complaints were resolved, as most were about billing issues and services that customers say they never signed up for.
Also making the top ten list were car dealerships, internet shopping sites and furniture stores and collection agencies.
