A Rutgers grad student from China…who caused a security breach at Newark Liberty Airport that led to worldwide flight delays…has pleaded guilty to a petty disorderly persons offense in Newark Municipal Court.
Haisong Jiang - who ducked under a security rope so he could kiss his girlfriend goodbye - was sentenced to 100 hours of community service and ordered to pay court costs and a 500 dollar fine.
Afterwards, he said "I just wanted to spend more time with my girlfriend - I had no intention of crossing a security area…I made a big mistake and I also learned a big lesson in my life."
Jiang's lawyer Eric Bruce said "given the fact that Haisong Jiang had no criminal intent whatsoever in this case, the sentence that was imposed is fair and reasonable…we've consulted with immigration counsel, and we expect it will not have an adverse affect on his immigration status."
He also said "he is ready to make amends to the community, he knows he has to do that, he wants to do that, and then he's going to move on."
When asked about Jiang's girlfriend, Bruce said "I'm happy to report that they are still together and they're still very much in love."
