Bill Would Permit Restraining Orders Against Known Drug Locations

Joe Cutter
Legislation sponsored by a Camden Assemblyman would strike a blow at drug-dealing "hotspots" police know are chronic locations for dealers to repeatedly return to the scene of their crimes.

Assemblyman Angel Fuentes' bill would provide for the application of a judge's restraining order against a person charged with drug dealing to keep them from going back to the same selling corner or street to conduct sales. He says neighboprs know where the dealers are and this is a way to strike back. Fuentes says it would not allow drug dealers or even gang people to terrorize good residents in a particular block or in a particular community.

He says he has the support of Camden police and a number of Community groups. Fuentes says dealers need access to known sales areas, and if those areas are denied them, the dealers' criminal activity is also restrained.
